How does this work with a product lead growth model which seems to be the opposite approach?

Do you mean product led growth? You still need to have a beachhead. Segmentation is extremely important, also for PLG.

Most companies can't do PLG for the first 100 customers. Slack got their first customers via their investor's network. Not PLG. Just warm intro outreach.

You will need to get them. I think PLG distracts founders, and they get a feeling off: "If you build it they will come"
